AI CS3 + Flickr + In The Mod mashup

Adobe Illustrator CS3 + Flickr + In The Mod mash-up from dr woohoo on Vimeo

What do you get when Dr. Woohoo mashes up Adobe Illustrator CS3, Flickr and In The Mod: Color Analytics? A free swf Panel that runs inside AI CS3 that allows you to search Flickr & In The Mod, view the colors from each image or painting you select and then save them directly to the Swatches Panel in AI.

Inspiration
The inspiration for the Flickr integration comes from a variety of sources – watching what Mario and Marcos did with Kelvin’s Flashr; looking at the photographs of the Ronin, Annie Liebowitz and Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir; and of course the colors we see all around us – in the orchids and the sunsets – whose combinations are simply perfect.

System Requirements
- Adobe Illustrator CS3
- Macs (OS X 10.4.10) or PC
- Active internet connection.

Installation
- After unzipping the attached files, save them in your Adobe Illustrator CS3/Presets/Scripts/ directory and restart AI

Usage
- Before running the script (InTheMod_beta.jsx), either create a new document or open an existing document and be sure that your Swatches Panel is open. (Window Menu: Swatches)
- To run the script, select File: Scripts: InTheMod_beta

Flickr
This will launch a popup panel and loads the swf file. Thanks to Kelvin Luck’s Flashr, an AS wrapper for the Flickr API, just enter a tag to search and retrieve images from Flickr. Select the thumbnail image you would view the color palettes for by clicking on the thumbnail icon. The scroll pane will slide over to make room for the visualization view. If you like the colors and want to add them to your AI Swatches Panel, click on the AI icon in the lower right corner. That’s it!

In The Mod
To access to all of the (in)famous paintings and color palettes on In The Mod, click on the ITM button on the main screen (that has scrollable thumbnails). The process of seeing the color visualization and saving the palettes is the same as above.

Sorting by Hue, Saturation or Brightness
After saving the colors to your Swatches panel, you can also sort them by Hue, Saturation or Brightness. To do so, there’s a trick: click on the open document window (so the focus is pulled off of the swf Panel) and then select from the menu File: Scripts: SortByHue-Sat-Bri. I prefer sorting by Brightness, so I typically enter ‘B’ in the popup prompt. The rest is magic.

Is it perfect? No, far from it. This is a beta and I have a long list of fixes and enhancements I would love to make when I have some spare time, but it is functional and it is extremely fun to use and I felt it was something worthy of sharing.

Leopard & Flash Player issue
Just a heads up… I recently updated my mac to Leopard and have experienced redraw issues with the Flash Player (9.0.115.0) within the swfPanel in both Illustrator and Photoshop CS3. Aral was kind enough to confirm he’s have the same issues on his box. Hopefully Adobe will be able to resolve this issue soon… I’ll keep you posted.

Download
We are in the process of wrapping up the latest beta version and will be posting it soon.

Stumble it!

Does it make a swatch for every pixel in the image (without repeats)?

It’s a great idea, but I found myself using the palette as an Image Browser and eye-dropping colors from that rather than grabbing all those millions of swatches (a floating image browser is something Adobe should pay you for anyway).

Sorting by H S or B should be part of AI itself (they have sort by ‘kind’). Very nice.

I just found your ITM tab where I can load the colors from art history — groovey.

‘Does it make a swatch for every pixel in the image (without repeats)?’

jim - all of the pixels are considered single instances/observations, the frequency/popularity of each unique color is then tallied and duplicate colors are eliminated. the size of each color circle is relative to its popularity - the more popular it is, the larger the circle. when you save the swatches to the Swatch Panel, the most popular swatches appear first.

in regards to the # of swatches it is currently returning, there’s actually a maximum number that is set before it eliminates duplicates… which i will probably allow you to manually define in the future.

i bet HSB will be… ;) . thanks for the great feedback - i hope this tool helps you out.

Small bug trying to sort when the document color mode is CMYK:

    Error 1224: Numeric value expected
    Line: 61
    -> newRGBSwatch.color = newColor;

Also, if the document is closed, you cannot create a new document unless you close the In The Mod palette.
    Keep up the good work!

you’re right - it doesn’t currently support CMYK… but it will in the future. for the time-being, i need to add a better error message so it’s a little more obvious. in relation to creating a new document with the In The Mod palette open, it seems to be an interesting focus issue… where the swf doesn’t let go of the focus unless you actually click on a document that is already open. i’ll need to look into it a little more when i have some spare time. thanks for the feedback!

[…] A couple weeks ago I volunteered at the Vidfest, Vancouver International Design FESTival, and was able to attend a workshop given by Joshua Davis. In this seminar one of the things he talked about was a process he had to extract colours from photographs, and I was quite amazed because when you extract colour from nature photography all the colors blend beautifully. And I started doing it getting great results. Well, a couple weeks after I was looking into the Automator Application and how it can help you do stuff like resizing images and what not, and I started looking for Adobe Automator scripts, see what people have done with this application. After looking for a while I found a post called “AI CS3 + Flickr + In The Mod mashup.” So I started reading it, and It was quite amazing. What it was, was a flash application that gets images from Flickr depending on what you are looking for, and then you can extract the colours from these images, real-time from Illustrator. All you have to do is run the Script look for images and copy the colour palette to your swatches. It doesn’t get easier than that, so if you are looking for fast good colours in seconds, this is a must have for you. Here’s a video on how the application works, enjoy […]

  19. Problem with the script Says:

I haven’t been able to use the script yet, it doesn’t seem to work properly in my computer (it is a PC by the way).
After I’ve browsed and selected a photo nothing else happens. The area just bellow the selected photo remains black, unlike in the video where it fills with colourful circles. And if I try to export a pallet then only 3 colours are exported.
It looks as if the script can’t (or won’t) analyze the image because after I’ve loaded a photo there is a delay and then a slash comes up in the lower left corner. My cursor changes to active (such as when you put the cursor over a link, in a webpage) when on top of it but if I click on it nothing happens.
Here is a screen capture of the problem (the different links all have the same image)

I would love to use this script; I hope you are able to find an answer to this little problem.
I’ve got the latest version of Flash and have setup the firewall to allow Illustrator to fully access the Internet.

    Something extra:
It would be great if the photos could be clicked and we’d be taken to that Flickr page

thanks for the posting – i’m not sure why the data visualization is not loading for you. this was really meant to be a proof-of-concept and i decided to through it online as a test to see how well it was received. because of the generally positive response, albeit bugs and all, we have been working hard on getting a new commercial version out that handles the visualization in a more robust manner, as well as introducing a ton of new features. stay tuned and we’ll post some more news soon.

if you’re interested in beta-testing it, please send an email to support-At-drwoohoo-Dot-com and thanks for your understanding and feedback.
